All quotes are from THE OTHER BROTHER by Kristen Granata.

1. Sometimes you think you’re making the right choices in life, but those choices can turn out to be the wrong ones, and you just didn’t foresee how badly it could go.

2. People are not born hating the world. Those people usually feel like the world hates them.

3. Safe will keep you protected, for the most part. Safe will give you a fine life. Brave, on the other hand, could give you opportunities and experiences that you would never have known if you didn’t take the chance.

4. We often look at our parents like superheroes. We think they can do no wrong. They raise us, protect us, and care for us. Then, we get to a certain age and realize our parents are only humans. They make mistakes, just like we do. They don’t know what they’re doing any more than we do.

5. What we need to practice isn’t how to be perfect. We’re all trying to figure out our lives, and we’re all going to make mistakes. What we need to practice more of is forgiveness.

6. Death is a scary thing. But you can’t stop yourself from having a life just because you’re afraid of what it will bring. You can’t let fear rule you. Fear isn’t real. It’s all in your head. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can heal.

7. Once you reveal the skeletons in your closet, there’s no more darkness left to hide them in. Light shines like a spotlight on your worst imperfections. You’re left with nothing but hope. Hope that people can forgive you for all your wrongs. Hope that people will love you in spite of them.

8. I learned early on that people die, and there’s nothing you can do about it. It hurts like hell, and you never fully get over it. But that doesn’t mean you can turn off your heart and refrain from loving anyone ever again.

9. Life is short. Each moment is fleeting. We’re all destined to die, one way or another. You need to decide if you can handle that certainty. Follow your head, and live in fear, or follow your heart, and live in love. What kind of person are you? Do you choose to play it safe, or can you choose to be brave?
